It’s become an annual spring tradition for my young yogis to participate in a project that demonstrates how yoga is more than physical postures and breathing exercises. Karma yoga, the yoga of selfless service, provides us an opportunity to look beyond the frustrations and troubles in our own lives and act in a way that benefits others.
More ambitious than our previous projects, our 2016 goal is to crochet at least twenty “plarn” sleeping mats for homeless members of our community. Not only do these mats provide a comfortable sleeping surface, they help us repurpose plastic grocery bags which might otherwise end up in landfills.
If you feel inspired to help us, we’re planning a Community Crochet Day (date TBA) where yogis of all ages will work to complete our goal. You could also contribute by making your own mat, donating unwanted plastic grocery bags, or coming to class at Loving Kindness Yoga School in Carrboro on a Monday at 4:15 p.m. to assist our youngest yogis with the task. Write to me at email@example.com to find out how you can get involved.
